  • Year 3 Visit to Ashridge July 2015

    Wed 15 Jul 2015
Year 3 enjoyed their visits to the Ashridge Estate in Berkhamsted this week.  Despite the drizzle, the children engaged enthusiastically in the task of making mini sculptures using natural materials and exploring the woods.  They planned giant pictures of animals within their groups and then demonstrated great team work in producing these, by carrying huge tree branches and bags of leaves. Unfortunately we were unable to climb the monument to view the sculptures as the steps were too slippery but some of the staff ventured up to take aerial photos which we later displayed at school.  We returned with rather wet feet after a great day out in the open air, feeling that we had experienced a little of the Andy Goldsworthy style of making art out of natural materials.

  • Winning image chosen for Parish Council "Plant 100 Trees" campaign

    Mon 13 Jul 2015

Lilly, a ten year old pupil at Chalfont St Peter Academy had her beautiful picture of a tree chosen from over 75 entries as the image to be used by Chalfont St Peter Parish Council’s Plant 100 trees campaign and received £125 in gift vouchers as her prize from local Councillors Michael Day and Kate Southworth.

Louise Roffey, a teacher at Chalfont St Peter Academy school and Headteachers Elizabeth Underwood said that the children, after watching the Parish Council campaign video, were amazed by the facts they learnt about how much trees benefit us all and had all been highly motivated to enter the campaign competition.
Daniel, Tia and Emily were highly commended and each received £25 gift vouchers.
Chalfont St Peter Parish Council have launched a tree planting campaign to help the environment, reduce pollution and improve the aesthetics of the village.

Concerned about the ever increasing pollution from traffic, and in view of the proposed construction that will probably take place locally over the next few years, the Parish Council are hoping to raise enough money from local businesses and residents, to plant trees alongside roads in the village, where their ability to absorb dangerous toxins from exhaust fumes will be most beneficial. The prizes were provided by the Parish Council and local business Integra Property Services.

Roadside trees can reduce the pollution in your home by 60%.
A video called trees benefit to health and environment will shortly be available to view on the Parish Council website.

The Council are asking everyone to consider donating whatever they can to their Tree Fund, simply out of a wish to make this a healthier, more beautiful village, or perhaps as a celebration of an important occasion, or in memory of someone or an event.

All donations will be recorded in a donations book which will be held in the Parish Council Offices, and any message to accompany a donation can be noted alongside the name.

The campaign aims to raise £25,000 in order to plant 100 trees. Anyone donating £250 will be credited with having donate a tree and will have a page dedicated to that donation in the book.

All contributions however small, will be gratefully received and anyone who would like to make a contribution can contact the Parish Council on 01753 891582,  email : clerk@chalfontstpeter-pc.gov.uk or post a cheque to, Chalfont St Peter Parish Council Gravel Hill, Chalfont St Peter, SL9 9QX

  • International Day and Arts Evening 8th July 2015

    Wed 08 Jul 2015

Wednesday 8th July was our International Day where children throughout the school dressed in national costume or the colours of the flag of the country they researched.

Within classes each year group focused on different continents around the world and children researched a country of their choice with many opting to present information about a country which their family has links with. A huge exhibition was displayed in the school hall for children and parents to view during our Arts Evening which took place later.

An invitation to parents to bring a dish of food to share at the Arts Evening was met with a wonderful response: dishes of food from all around the world arrived in the hall with teams of parents collaborating to provide a feast of flavours and culinary talent!

The evening developed with children from all year groups welcoming the parents with "hello" in multiple languages and then performing in songs relating to the international theme, singing "One World" which described the different people, foods, cultures, faiths and countries around our world and then "I am a small part of the world" which encourages us to join together so that we can stand strong and bold, united in our desire for peace in the world.

The evening unfolded with children reciting French poetry, the whole staff playing African drums before we all joined in a prayer for peace, written and spoken by our "Wings" group who focus their working group time on the ethos of our school. The evening ended with a final song, "No wars will stop us singing" which resounded across Chalfont St Peter!

  • Year 6 World War II "WOW" Day: Wednesday 1st July 2015

    Wed 01 Jul 2015

1940’s Wow Day – History off the Page Visit

On Wednesday this week, ‘History off the Page’ – a visiting history group – came to our school in order for year 6 to experience a little of what life was like in 1940s Britain.  In the morning, the children learned about life in school during that time and in the afternoon the hall was transformed from a 1940s classroom to a busy shopping village.  The children used their ration books to buy products and others were shopkeepers.  It was a wonderful day, enjoyed by all.  A fantastic opportunity to learn a little more about wartime Britain.

  • Arts Leaders’ Visit to the Stanley Spencer Gallery 1st July 2015

    Wed 01 Jul 2015

Thirteen children, who are this year’s Arts Leaders, enjoyed a visit to the Stanley Spencer Galley in Cookham. Along with four members of staff, they spent the afternoon with volunteer custodian Paul Grandidge learning about the world famous artist’s life and works. The group was spellbound by Paul’s entertaining descriptions of Spencer and the many eccentric aspects of his lifestyle, such as the pram on which he used to carry his easel and the fact that he so loved the village of Cookham where he lived, that his fellow art students called him ‘Cookham’ instead of Stanley. They also heard how his wartime experiences affected the rest of his life and changed the way he painted, before going on to study the displayed works. The children were guided to look for people, religion and Cookham in the paintings – Spencer’s favourite subjects – as well as observing the minute detail and pattern in brickwork, floor tiles or knitting. Our guide’s knowledgeable commentary enabled them to identify Spencer’s family and friends in the paintings. After the gallery, the group proceeded to a walk around Cookham, viewing the Spencer family home and various buildings, the churchyard and riverside locations where he painted.

Some of the children’s comments were:
“I didn’t realise how fascinating art could be!”
“If Sir Stanley Spencer was alive he would really appreciate it and probably say thank you.”
“Thanks for an amazing day – I will go again with my family.”
“My favourite part was definitely the walk round Cookham.”
“I loved the fact that we walked all around Cookham to see exactly where he painted his pictures.”

So all in all, it was a fantastic afternoon, enjoyed by everyone and a fascinating insight into a wonderful artist. Despite being the hottest day of the year, the children were extremely attentive and responded so well to the questions and discussion with Paul. Thank you to the gallery staff and Chiltern Fine Arts Society for arranging this for our school.
