Gerrards Cross Fire Station Visit 27.6.14

Thank you to Gerrards Cross Fire Station who visited Year 6 on Friday 27th June. The year 6 children took part in a fire safety presentation learning about how to stay safe from fire in the home, road, kitchen and water safety. They also had the opportunity to look around the fire truck and learn about what the fire service do.

It was a really beneficial session not only benefiting the children's understanding of  safety but also about careers within the fire service.

Did you know that if you do not have smoke alarms in your home you can call 01296 744477 to book a free fire risk check with your local fire service?

  • Y6 Games

    Thu 26 Jun 2014

On Thursday 33 Year 6 children took part in the Year 6 Games at Dr Challoners High School. Congratulations to all the children who represented the school and competed with great sportsmanship.

There was a lot of talent on show with the tennis, table tennis, tag rugby and  football teams all coming away undefeated and winning their category.  The cricketers and hockey players also played extremely well coming 4th and the netball team only lost one of their 6 matches coming 3rd.

Overall the school came second on the day; all the children played fantastically and were a pleasure to watch.  A special mention to Shae Thakker for winning the best table tennis player of the day and Tom Hunter for winning the best hockey player of the day.

As well as the football, tag rugby and netball teams for winning the best team spirit certificates.

Well done to all the children for participating.

  • Raising The Flag

    Mon 23 Jun 2014

On Monday 23rd June, our school was represented by four Year 6 pupils, freshly returned from their French Residential Trip, at the Raising the Flag ceremony at the Parish Council Offices.

Members of the Parish Council and British Legion along with other members of the local parish joined together to raise the flag for Armed Forces Day. Following an introduction by Keith Bowler, Chair of the British Legion and Linda Smith, Chair of the Parish Council, Reverend Overton delivered a brief input regarding the armed forces and the focus of our prayer.

Our children then led the group in prayer.

All enjoyed the raising of the flag and shared tea and cake afterwards in the offices!

    Update Friday 20th June @ 12.30pm
We returned back to school following our McDonald’s breakfast in Winchester to a warm welcome from parents, staff and children of the school.  It is always a relief to turn that final corner in the coaches towards the playgrounds!

It has been a hugely successful trip, thanks to the superb team of adults accompanying the trip who enjoyed great camaraderie, and not least to the wonderful children who excelled in their behaviour, manners and engagement. They were great fun to be with and made us all proud.

I hope all members of the party are able to enjoy a well-earned rest after such a busy week of activity from dawn till dark each day – you all deserve it! Thank you for everything.
Lastly, thank you to parents for ‘lending’ us your children for a week – they are a credit to you, our school and themselves.
I can’t wait until next year, already!
    Mrs Underwood

    Update Friday 20th June @ 7.00am
We docked at Portsmouth at 6.45am. The children were superb last night, settling quickly to sleep and everyone has a very restful and quiet night.

Disembarking at 6.45am, we shall be making our way to Winchester for a much anticipated McDonald’s breakfast before continuing home to Chalfont St Peter.
We expect to be at school by 9.45am depending on traffic. We will keep you updated accordingly with our progress and estimated arrival time.

We have received so many wonderful comments during the week about the excellent behaviour of our children that I feel it is important to share these with you. The feedback began with the centre staff on our arrival at Les Tourelles who commented how easily so many children had disembarked from the coaches and made their way to 30+ different rooms. Other comments included one from a gentleman at one of the museums who had witnessed the children investigating the exhibitions and watching the 25min film. He said how well the children had behaved and how quiet they had been in the film – he commented, “In fact, it makes me proud to be British!” Another visitor commented to one of the children how impressed they were with the group.  My personal highlight was taking such a large group into the Abbey at Mont St Michel during a service being held by the monks. As choral Latin verses echoed through the building and signs of “Silence” glared at the doorways, our 85 children removed their caps and entered, sitting in pews to experience this special event. Not a whisper was uttered and just as silently as we had entered, several minutes later we left before the formal mass would begin.

Being a somewhat distinctive spectacle throughout the week in their red hats and red sweatshirts we stood out from the crowd which was important for identification purposes, but once again Chalfont St Peter CE Academy children shone in their performance and conduct.

Well done everyone! I feel immensely proud of the whole party.

    Update Thursday 8.30pm

The museum in Bayeux proved to be an interesting and successful visit, with children really engaged with the exhibits and displays. Just over the road, we walked to Bayeux Cemetery – the largest Commonwealth war graves cemetery in Normandy. Laying a wreath on behalf of all at Chalfont St Peter CE Academy, we prayed for those who lost their lives during the war.

Following a superb meal at Le Petit Normand, we have just checked in at the ferry port and will be boarding at 9pm (English time). All children and staff are well and looking forward to the return journey.

We will keep parents updated with our progress tomorrow via the website. Looking forward to seeing you all!

    Update Thursday 2.30pm (English time)
The children thoroughly enjoyed their visit to the market this morning, using their pocket money and French language to buy gifts and souvenirs. The church was a special addition to the morning, where children learned about the impact of D-Day on the town and the parachutist who became entangled on the tower. Our visit to the Farm Museum gave us all a chance to find out more about French culture and rural French life.

Feedback from the children was exceptionally positive. We are now making our way to Bayeux for two more visits to conclude our trip before dinner at Le Petit Normand.

    Update Thursday 8.30am (English time)

We have all packed, loaded onto the coach and departed Les Tourelles. The weather is warm and sunny once again and we are now making our way to St Mère Église to visit the church and market. Later: Normandy Farm museum, Bayeux “Battle of Normandy” Museum, Bayeux Cemetery, Le Petit Normand restaurant.
    Another busy day!

    Update 8.30pm (English time)
We have had sunshine all day today for our visit to Mont St Michel and the biscuit factory. A magical moment was shared when we were able to trust 85 children to walk silently to pews inside the abbey during a service being held by the monks and listen to the singing of verses in Latin.

Later, the children enjoyed the opportunity to use some of their pocket money to buy souvenirs in turn, taking a break from concentrated focus on their artwork, drawing and painting a picture of Mont St Michel. We look forward to the celebration of their work in the art exhibition in July.
Celebrations continued at dinner time with birthday cake for Edward’s birthday today and Joshua’s birthday tomorrow.
Talent show is next on the agenda. It’s non-stop!

    Update Tuesday 10pm (English time)
We had a well-received dinner of soup & French bread, shepherds pie followed by profiteroles on our return from Honfleur. Clean plates all round! Later only CSPA could design, produce, and so eloquently present in such detail their sandcastles based on the theme of “A summer of sport”. Fabulous!
We are all wind-blown and ready for our beds!

    Update Tuesday 5pm (English time)
We have had a lovely afternoon in Honfleur. A hazy sun came out for our picnic lunch in the park and remained whilst we sat by the harbour for sketching and painting of the harbour-side buildings. Having looked forward to requesting their own ice creams in a wide variety of flavours, the children were not disappointed with their purchases! Passers-by commented on the behaviour of the children and their focused concentration. Well done CSPA!

    Update Tuesday 11am (English time)
The children slept really soundly last night after the long day yesterday! This morning, we have visited Arromanches to learn about the Mulberry Harbour and see a spectacular film in a 3600 cinema. A lovely walk through the town brought us to St Peter’s church where we were able to make comparisons with our own church of St Peter at home.

Next we are settling into the coach to make the journey to Honfleur this afternoon.

    Update Monday 9.30pm (English time)

What a busy day! The children have been amazing. They have all eaten well this evening and following an evening walk up and down Gold Beach, besides the Atlantic Wall. We investigated a gun battery and imagined the scene of D-Day 70 years ago.

With the tide right out as far as the remnants of the Mulberry Harbour, we devised safety rules for being on the beach as part of a group of 85 children.

Exhausted from the day’s numerous activities, all are now tucked up in bed and settling down for the night.

    Update: Monday 4pm.
We have had a really full day of visits today. Leaving Pegasus Bridge, we made our way to Bayeux where we enjoyed a delightful lunch at the Petit Normand. The children displayed excellent manners and tried all of the food they were offered.
Our tour of the Bayeux Tapestry proved an interesting one for the group before we had to move on to meet our PenPals next to the cathedral. We were very impressed with the children’s confidence to try and communicate and everyone really enjoyed the experience!

Inside the cathedral next for a breath-taking view of the beautiful interior. Lighting a candle one group decided to recite the school prayer, whilst another devised their own prayer about friendship and bravery being away from home.
Everywhere we have been, admiring tourists have commented about the excellent behaviour and the red hats and hoodies have certainly attracted attention.

Now back on the coach, the children are enjoying a well-earned rest on the way to Les Tourelles, our residential centre.

    Update Monday 6.15am

Leaving the playground just before 6.30pm, we had a comfortable journey down to Portsmouth. Check in with Brittany Ferries was quick and efficient and we boarded the ferry at about 9.20pm. Children settled quickly into the allocated areas, with most sleeping on the floor with their blankets and pillows. By 11.10pm the lights were out and all was quiet! (It's true!) Such is the behaviour of Chalfont St Peter CE Academy children! We are on our way to Pegasus Bridge to see the monuments of the places where the gliders landed on D-Day before we move on to visit the cafe Gondree to meet Arlette Gondree.

  • Chalfont's Got Talent Finals at the Summer Fete

    Sat 14 Jun 2014

Following the auditions in year groups, the semi finals in front of the whole school, eight acts (two per year group) were selected to perform at the finals held on the day of our summer fete on the top playground stage.

The talent was amazing as always, with a variety of singers, instrumentalists and performers. The judges, (a past teacher and a past parent of the school) had a very difficult job to select an upper school and lower school winner, but finally they opted for Charlotte (Y4) and Abby (y5) to be this year's winners. Charlotte sang, "I dreamed a dream" from Les Miserables and Abby played the clarinet version of "Jar of Hearts". Congratulations to all contestant who were so brave to perform in front of such a large audience!

  • Young Entrepreneurs' Sale at the Summer Fete

    Sat 14 Jun 2014

Well done to the Young Entrepreneurs who made almost £300 at the summer fete!

    Quote from ‘Simply Sweet’
For our sale we sold ‘Dad Bags’ ( paper bags designed like a shirt and tie). Inside the bags we put 4 medium sized brownies. We also sold brownies separately for those that fancied a tasty snack. We chose to sell the Dad Bags because we thought it was an original eye-catching idea and they could be sold for multi-purposes e.g. for Father’s Day or a just a treat for themesleves. We enjoyed everything, but most of all we enjoyed selling the products and seeing the happy faces of our customers.

    Quote from ‘All Stars’
Our group made wooden hearts decorated with colourful buttons, hung with ribbon and bags of homemade fudge in gift bags, tied with ribbon. The button hearts were unique and created by us; each one looked individual and different. We advertised our stall with big banners and were very enthusiastic. The fudge was homemade and looked very professional. We think that by tying it up with real ribbon made it very unique. All of the other types of confectionary that were on sale were aimed at children. Ours was clearly a sophisticated product that would also appeal to adults.

This initiative which has been running for the last 4 years is a hugely successful project aimed to provide an opportunity for children of Year 6 to gain a greater understanding of marketing, product design, budgeting and profit. Thank you to Mrs Gale and Mrs Lown who have managed the enthusiastic children this year!

  • Year 6 French Breakfast

    Thu 12 Jun 2014

French cafe-style music was drifting out of open windows and doors in Year 6 today as in preparation for their French residential trip next week, Y6 have been trying out their French during their French Breakfast!

Mrs Downie, French specialist organises the event every year, which always proves very popular with the children (and staff!). With a variety of French bread, croissants, jams, brioche together with hot chocolate and juices, the children certainly had plenty to choose from. Remembering how to ask for their choices ensuring that they included 'please' and thank you' was the order of the morning so that next week they can use their French confidently at the residential centre, in the market and shops.

Mrs Underwood, Headteacher who will be leading the trip to France, was delighted to see the children practising and clearly excited about their trip. "We are really looking forward to the trip this year, especially with all of the 70th year anniversary celebrations which have been on television. Our Year 6 our fantastic children and they will have a great time I'm sure."

  • Cricket Tournament

    Fri 06 Jun 2014

Well done to the 16 girls and boys who represented the school superbly at a cricket tournament at Chesham Cricket Club on Friday 6th June.

The children played some fantastic cricket and were a pleasure to be with throughout the day!

  • The Bishop of Nandyal visits Chalfont St Peter CE Academy

    Thu 05 Jun 2014

Today, we were honoured to welcome the visit of not just one Bishop but two!

The new Bishop of Nandyal, Bishop Pushpa, the first female Bishop of the Anglican Church in India, visited our school as part of her visit to England. She was accompanied by Bishop Alan, Bishop of Buckingham and Revd. Rosie Harper.

Through our close relationship with the Oxford Diocese, we have formed a partnership with the Diocese of Nandyal in southern central India. Our "Project India" fundraising in recent years has raised sufficient money combined with that from other schools within the Diocese to help build an ICT suite in the Bishop Joseph Bunyan School in Nandyal and provide furniture for one of their classrooms.

We were delighted to renew our friendship with the schools of Nandyal with Bishop Pushpa’s visit this morning. Arriving at nine o’clock, Bishop Pushpa, Bishop Alan and Revd. Harper were greeted by Mrs Underwood. Our Impact Reporters lined the route to the hall where the whole school waited expectantly. On arrival at the top of the stairs, our guests received rapturous applause as they entered the packed hall and made their way to chairs prepared in the centre.
Following the warm welcome and allowing time for our visitors to settle into the school, everyone sang in great voice, our school hymn, “Lord Give Us the Vision”.
Mrs Underwood, led collective worship on the theme of Pentecost, explaining the feeling of excitement, warmth and energy created when the Holy Spirit came upon the Disciples on the 50th day after Easter.

The fruits of Pentecost are closely linked with our school core values. Our ‘Wings’ presented their “Lights of the Week” – children who had been recognised for displaying our core value for this half term of “Compassion”. They were presented with special certificates nominated by the “Wings”.
Just as our assembly was drawing to a close, Bishop Pushpa asked if she may say a few words. She commented on how happy she felt to be welcomed into the Chalfont St Peter “family” and how our partnership together was part of God’s family.

Bishop Pushpa then made her way to the front of the hall, where she presented Bishop Alan, as part of the Indian ceremonial tradition, with a beautiful shawl, marked with the partnership between the Dioceses of Nandyal and Oxford and in addition, an ornate garland. Presentations of shawls were also made to Revd. Harper, Mrs Underwood and finally to Mr Underwood, who began the special partnership along with Bishop Alan, several years ago.

Bishop Pushpa, concluded the assembly by blessing our school. Following an interlude where Bishop Pushpa met with Mrs Underwood, Mr Whittall, Chair of Governors and members of the Senior Leadership team, the visitors were able to visit several classes to see the children working.
It was certainly a memorable occasion and one we shall all treasure forever.

Bishop Pushpa was continuing her visits today including a visit to Windsor Castle to meet the Queen and tomorrow, a guided tour of the Houses of Parliament.

We wish her well and look forward to a continuing close relationship in the future..

  • Quad Kids

    Thu 05 Jun 2014
Congratulations to the small group of CSPA athletes who represented the school in great style and with some exceptional talent at the annual Quadkids Athletics Event at Dr Challoner's High School. The event involves a range of field and track events, as well as a whole team relay. Our team won by 500 points and now go onto represent the area at the School Games at the Stoke Mandeville Stadium in July! Well done CSPA!
