  • Flight Lessons in Y6

    Wed 12 Nov 2014

Year 6 have been studying the history of space flight this term; an exciting new topic introduced this year as part of our brand new four year curriculum. This tied in perfectly with the incredibly adventurous Rosetta Mission to land a robotic probe upon a comet. Having learnt about the historical human 'firsts' of Yuri Gagarin, Valentina Tereshkova and Neil Armstrong and the robotic endeavours of Voyager, Mariner and Curiosity, here was a rare opportunity to witness history in the making!

In trying to provide some idea of scale and complexity of the undertaking, one analogy of what has been achieved is that it is like throwing a hammer from London to Delhi in India to hit a nail on the head.

So on the day after such an incredible achievement, the year 6 children enjoyed a history lesson detailing the 25 year history of the Rosetta mission, an excellent video made by the European Space Agency of the science behind landing on a comet and live news feed of the very first pictures of the comet's surface as they came in! All this was punctuated by highly inquisitive Q&A sessions.

  • Schools Prom at the Royal Albert Hal

    Wed 12 Nov 2014
On Wednesday evening 32 Year 6 children had the pleasure of a trip to London where we enjoyed a music-filled evening at the Royal Albert Hall in spectacular surroundings. The “Music For Youth” organisation presented a wide variety of musical presentations from schools around the country and provided great inspiration for our young musicians of the future. A fantastic evening to inspire our young children to continue their involvement with the Arts.
  • Roman Wow day in Year 4

    Tue 11 Nov 2014

Year 4 had a very memorable Roman Week this term. We had a visit from a historical company who taught us all about what life was like in the Roman times. We had the opportunity to try on armour and touch many artefacts.  This hands on experience taught us so much.

We also had a chance to complete a Roman inspired brass rubbing using metallic crayons. Throughout the week our teacher’s taught us all about the Romans, we learnt about what life was like for the soldiers, all about the food they enjoyed, how they spent their leisure time in the baths and about the Gods they worshipped. It was a fascinating week and we all enjoyed ourselves.

  • Remembrance Assembly

    Tue 11 Nov 2014

Today, we held a special assembly to commemorate Armistice Day - 11 o'clock on the 11th day of the 11th month - the time that World War I came to an end. With the centenery of the outbreak of war, it was important to recognise this day in our history. The cannon blast boomed from the church on the dot of 11am and our hall, packed with 360 children and all members of staff, fell silent for 2 minutes until the second blast sounded.

Remembrance bands are to be issued to the children who represented the school on the parade on Remembrance Sunday and poppy seeds cast by members of each year group. Poppies have been on sale since last week, with one collection box, already filled and the second filling fast.

The Headteacher read a copy of an original letter from a soldier in the trenches to his wife and family back in England - he was the Great Grandfather of one of our past pupils. We listened to a recording of an extract from a journal written by a soldier in the trenches and sung "Make me a channel of your peace" - The Prayer of St Francis.

With music, pictures and the poem and prayer used at the Cenotaph, the assembly was a fitting tribute to those who gave their lives, have been wounded or continue to serve in the Armed Forces. We made special mention of three of our past pupils who are currently in the forces.

  • Table Tennis County Champions

    Tue 11 Nov 2014

Following an enthralling day's table tennis, we are delighted to report that Chalfont St Peter CE Academy has once again become County Table Tennis Champions, in both the U11 boys' and U11 girls' championships. A squad of 5 girls and boys made up our academy teams and everyone displayed a high standard of play.

Our U11 boys' squad comprising Marcus and Seb Los, Sam Fenner, Oliver Evans and Louis Basnayake, had to be at their very best to challenge and overcome some very strong opposition during the morning.

Meanwhile, our girls' squad comprising Betsy Godfrey, Maddy Kirkby, Ella Radcliffe, Savanna O'Regan, and Ellie Lothian, performed brilliantly to finish the morning unbeaten!

Both teams will represent Buckinghamshire in the national zone finals at Wednesbury, Birmingham on Saturday 31 January 2015.

During the afternoon, the individual championships took place and I am delighted to report that Betsy Godfrey became County Champion (2014) and therefore has qualified to represent Buckinghamshire in the individual national finals in Doncaster in April 2015, following in the footsteps of past pupils, Jemma Walker (2012) ad Shae Thakker (2013) . Marcus Los was just pipped at the post in the boys' individual final and came a very commendable runner up.

Finally, it was wonderful to see so many of our past pupils now representing their secondary schools: Dr Challoner's Grammar School U13, U16 and U19s; Dr Challoner's High School U13 and U16 all won through to the national zone finals. It was also splendid to note that The Chalfont Community College entered a team this year for the first time and played so well. The majority of players in these teams were made up of our past pupils! Brilliant!

The national zone finals promise to be quite an occasion for Chalfont St Peter and local secondary schools.

Grateful thanks to Mr John Underwood and Mrs Sue Rowley for their commitment and dedication to table tennis at our school and for accompanying/coaching the children.

  • Remembrance Sunday Parade

    Sun 09 Nov 2014

oday, over 50 children from Chalfont St Peter Church of England Academy represented the school for the Remembrance Sunday Parade. Many of our pupils were also part of the parade, representing organisations such as the Scouts and Guides.

Amidst bright autumn sunshine, the parade gathered at Tunmers Green near the Leisure Centre in Chalfont St Peter and paraded behind the band from the Girls' Air Cadets through Market Place to gather around the War Memorial in the churchyard of St Peter's Parish Church.

The pupils of Chalfont St Peter CE Academy looked magnificent in their uniforms and in such large numbers! Following a short ceremony where each organisation laid their wreaths at the foot of the memorial, the children then proceeded into the Church Hall for a lovely children's service led by Revd Jim King and new curate, Ben Topham. Singing songs and hymns which we sing in school, "Where have all the flowers gone?", " The Prayer of St Francis of Assissi", "Love is flowing like a river" and " Give me oil in my lamp" our children sang well to add to the large numbers which packed the hall. The service reflected on the significance of the poppy, worn by all attending and the constant drive to achieve peace, encouraging our new generation of children to be "peacemakers".

Our children were presented earlier in the week with a copy of St John's Gospel by St Peter's Church- a replica of those that were given to the soldiers going to war in 1914 aswell as a small keepsake book, created by Ben Topham which is a collection of stories and items about WWI. With 5000 copies created any attendees were inviting to receive one too.

As Headteacher, I felt an immense sense of pride in our children who represented the school so fantastically. Each will be presented with a Remembrance wrist band as a memory of the day's parade and service. Well done and thank you to members of staff and friends of the school who also paraded with us.

  • Steel Band Visit

    Tue 04 Nov 2014
As part of our International Arts week, the children enjoyed a demonstration of steel drums by "Irie Steelpans" playing during an assembly for the whole school which involved the children singing and dancing in a carnival atmosphere. The characteristic sound of the drums delighted the attentive audience and actually playing the drums was a wonderful experience for members of the upper school who experienced a series of workshops in their classes during the rest of the day. A great experience for the children to further their understanding of playing chords and melody and also to appreciate a different type of instrument, perhaps not commonly seen in schools! It was fascinating to find out how the steelpans are made and the history of their development in the Caribbean.
