    Carribean Arts Week October 2016

The final week before half term we held our annual Arts Week. During the week the children experienced a wide variety of activities, workshops and assemblies all to improve their learning about our whole school topic of The Carribean.

Carribean poet, Valerie Bloom OBE visited the school to share her writing and inspiration for her poetry.

Tuesday morning brought a very famous and inspirational visitor , Baroness Floella Benjamin OBE. She spoke to all 360 children about her upbringing in Trinidad with fascinating stories of how she and her 7 brothers and sisters experienced their childhood there. When as a 10 year old Floella came to England, she experienced great struggles through bullying and racism and she inspired us all with her stories of how she changed from fighting with her fists to using her smile.

    Year 4 Superstars 18th October 2016

On Tuesday, Mr Hicks took 10 Year 4 children to the annual Davenies Superstars competition.  They took part in 8 events from penalty shootouts to target throwing and ending with a tug-of-war.  The 5 girls and 5 boys represented the school fantastically, winning a number of the events including the tug of war, making them the overall winners of the occasion! They should be very proud of their performance.  Well done to all who took part, it was an excellent afternoon of sporting brilliance which meant we brought home the trophy!

    Skype Link-up with France 11th October 2016

Today we had our first Skype link of the new academic year with our partner school in France. Our year 6 children were really confident and well-prepared to stand up in front of the webcam to speak both in English and French to the children in Y6 at St Joseph's School in Bayeux, France.

Children of both schools exchanged information and asked quesitons of each other, practising their language skills developed over the years in school. We look forward to a monthly link-up in addition to writing letters and cards as the year progresses. Well done Mrs Downie - a great innovative use of our technology in school these days!

Y5 Science Dome Visit October 2016

Y5 children have been learning about "Our Place in Space" this term and to bring their learning to life we invited a company to bring in a science dome which gave the children a real experience of being inside a plnetarium with vibrant, moving images and real images of space, planets and stars in "real time" taken from satellites. The occasion certainly brought 'wow' moments to the children's learning and all were transfixed by the presentation inside the dome.

    Sports Festivals October 2016

As some year groups are already aware, we are participating ina number of sports festivals this year led and organised by some of the secondary schools in our area.  This is through our existing membership with a local partnership of schools which is funded by the government’s Sport Premium.  We have planned for every class in our academy to attend at least one sports festival during this year.  They involve a range of different sports and activities and it will be a wonderful opportunity for all children of our academy to be active, try something new, work as a team in their class and represent the academy!  Information regarding these festivals will be via letter from your child’s year leader/class teacher.

    Harvest Festival 6th October 2016

We made our first visit of the new school year to church for Harvest festival. With the retirement of our vicar, Revd. Charles Overton we were warmly welcomed by Revds. Ben Topham and Jim King. The children were beautifully behaved, arriving smartly with their gifts of food, this year being distributed via The London Run charity. Year 6 children led the service whilst the letters of the word "HARVEST" were rearranged to remind us that we need to give thanks to God for the food that we "HAVE"; we need to "SAVE" food; that some people "STARVE" through lack of food caused by drought or floods; we need to "SHARE" with those who are less fortunate than us; the farmers need to "REST" after the long hours spent bringing in the crops so that we can "EAT" the amazing foods we are used to enjoying. The church looked wonderful as always with its harvest displays and we all enjoyed interpreting the focus of each display.
