Arts Week 2018 - 'The Decades'

The children have enjoyed a fantastic week of activities prepared by their teachers and visiting artists. Year 6 were joined for two days by Emily Cooling to make beautiful willow and tissue paper lanterns decorated with silhouette pictures of winter while the other year groups made wire and silver foil sculptures in workshops with artist and inventor Darcy Turner.

Everyone took part in dance sessions with Darren and Sophie from the Dance Days company, learning dances from differtent decades such as disco, jive, the charleston and rock and roll, culminating in year groups performing to each other. Ria from the Crew Company provided wonderfully interactive sessions on the decades, aided by many artefacts and visual aids. The role plays involved all sorts of characterisations ranging from the Spice Girls, complete with sparkly dresses and huge wigs to a masked Margaret Thatcher and a bridal Princess Diana. The Queen and Duke of Edinburgh presided over the proceedings accompanied by a (toy) corgi of course!

On Thursday afternoon we all watched a highly amusing and energetic version of Charlotte's Web by M and M Productions. The children enjoyed seeing the baby piglet grow to a life sized version and the costumes and scenery were used to great effect.

In classrooms the staff arranged activities ranging from fashion designs and cartoons across the decades to Anish kapoor sculptures, dancing the macarena and making pompoms. Over half term the children will need to complete their arts week diaries and year group winners will be decided when we return.

Thank you to everyone who helped to make the week such a success, especially to Ms Meek who worked tirelessly to coordinate the entire week!
