Modern Foreign Languages

Children are taught French from years 3 to 6 using a wide variety of resources. All four skills of speaking, listening, reading and writing (with greater emphasis on grammar in years 5 and 6) are taught. Phonics is introduced in Year 3 and intercultural aspects of French life are visited as part of the curriculum.

Chalfont St Peter CE Academy has an established link with the École St Joseph, Notre Dame in Bayeux and each child in year 6 is allocated their own pen friend. The children have the opportunity to meet their pen friends during our annual trip to Normandy in June. In the summer term of year 6, the children have a French breakfast in preparation for their visit to France, where they are encouraged to practise speaking French.

A child from each year group has regularly represented the school in a local annual French verse speaking competition and we try to give different children the opportunity to represent their school each year.

Further activities include an annual visit from a French theatre group and a whole school celebration of the European Day of Languages when each year group  enjoys “Taster” language sessions offered in Spanish, German, Italian and Russian to encourage the children in their language acquisition skills, as well as their enjoyment of learning a foreign language. La Chandeleur is a popular event in the school’s calendar also celebrated each year.

Some extra curricular clubs and 'WOW days' offer the opportunity for children to experience languages beyond French with Mandarin, Spanish, Latin, Italian and Russian having been on offer at Chalfont St Peter C of E Academy.
